After years in hi-fi, we can become a little sceptical about the next new speaker.
Another series. Another revision. Another explanation of why this version is better than the one that came before it.
Customers understandably get caught up in it. Is this the first version or the second? Should they wait for the replacement? Has the speaker they enjoyed yesterday suddenly become something they ought to upgrade?
There are worthwhile advances, of course. But a new model number, by itself, tells us very little about how much more we’ll enjoy our music. Sometimes we find ourselves wondering whether the pressure to release something new has overtaken the reason for doing it.
Our interest in JBL has taken us into a much deeper conversation. Exploring its Classic and Studio Monitor speakers has been one of the most absorbing speaker stories we’ve encountered in a long time.
The L52, L82 and L100 are often the face of JBL in a hi-fi showroom. Their distinctive appearance makes them immediately recognisable, and for many listeners, they are an introduction to the brand.
They are also where many presentations of JBL begin and end.
For us, they invite a closer look. The Classic Series represents one part of a much broader story, and exploring that story has become one of the most rewarding things we’ve done together in the showroom.
We’ve long been intrigued by JBL. The further we look into its history, the more the relationships between its speakers begin to reveal themselves: where the designs came from, what they were intended to do, and why different branches of the family continue to exist.
That history gives the speakers context. Listening gives it meaning.

Our connection with JBL extends beyond the shop.
Con owns the JBL 4349s. Edward owns the 4309 Studio Monitors. Nick owns a pair of original JBL L96s, which he recently had restored.
Between them, that connection spans different generations of JBL—speakers chosen for their own homes and lived with over time. It brings a personal understanding of the brand to the conversations we have at Melbourne Hi Fi.
There is something valuable about discussing a speaker with someone who goes home and listens to it. Familiarity develops across different recordings, listening levels and moods. You learn what draws you back to it, what partnering equipment brings out in it, and where another speaker might suit someone better.
In the video below, Edward introduces the wider JBL family from that perspective. Our enthusiasm comes from ownership, curiosity and time spent listening.
What holds our attention is the sense of purpose we find in this part of JBL’s range.
We see considered evolution: designs with a recognisable identity, developed around particular ways of reproducing and experiencing music. Understanding those intentions makes the differences between the speakers far more interesting than a comparison of model numbers.
The 4309, 4312G and 4349 bring the Studio Monitor side of JBL into the conversation. Alongside the Classics, they give us much more to explore—different designs, different presentations and different possibilities for a listening room.

Our time with the 4312G has been a good example. During one session, changing the amplifier and returning to familiar music changed our response to the system. To our ears, the result was clearer and more engaging, and we wanted to keep listening.
Those experiences deepen our respect for the speakers. They also remind us why thoughtful demonstration and system matching matter. Understanding a speaker takes more than putting it on display.

The Classic Series is a small part of the JBL story. There is considerably more to discover beyond that familiar face.
At Melbourne Hi Fi, we want to share that broader story properly: the history, the different families, the reasons behind the designs and what we’ve discovered through listening and ownership.
Bring music you know. Ask us why we chose the JBLs we have at home. Hear the differences for yourself.
Whether your interest begins with an L52, an L100 or a Studio Monitor, we can help you explore what comes next. This is a brand we know personally, respect deeply and enjoy introducing people to.
